Certified as a specialist in family law by the Board of Legal Specialization of The State Bar of California, Brenda Lopez focuses her practice exclusively on those types of matters. She provides representation to clients throughout San Diego County and its surrounding areas. Ms. Lopez is admitted to practice before all California state courts.
A large part of Ms. Lopez\'s practice involves assisting people who are facing the end of their marriage and who are having to deal with the division of complex assets such as business interests, retirement accounts and stock options. She also helps her clients on matters surrounding child custody and visitation as well as alimony and child support. While she is a forceful courtroom advocate when advisable, she will often help her clients reach an accord on some of these issues through negotiating a settlement agreement or by employing other alternative dispute resolution methods such as mediation and collaborative law.
In addition to her matrimonial practice, Ms. Lopez helps clients obtain modifications to or the enforcement of existing parenting and support orders, and she works with victims of domestic violence who are seeking appropriate protective orders. Her other family law experience has included the preparation and review of prenuptial and post-marital agreements, and international child abductions that are governed by the applicable Hague Convention.
Fluent in both English and Spanish, Ms. Lopez attended San Diego State University, where she majored in psychology and received a Bachelor of Arts in 2007. Her legal education came at the Thomas Jefferson School of Law, and she was awarded her Juris Doctor in 2011. Ms. Lopez serves on the Board of Directors for the San Diego County Bar Association and San Diego La Raza Lawyers Association Scholarship Fund, and is the co-chair of the Equality & Action Committee of Lawyers Club of San Diego.
